Leadership Quote of the Day 439In its own way, the most harmful dragon we chase is the one that makes us think we can change things that are simply not ours to change. That someone decided not to fund your company isn't up to you. But the decision to refine and improve your pitch, that is. That someone stole your idea or got to it first? No. To pivot, improve it, or fight for what is yours? Yes. The Obstacle is the WayRyan Holiday____________________________________________I once listened to a boss I greatly enjoyed working for tell someone “Don’t worry we won’t let you fail.”I understood why she said it - my peer was nervous about a large undertaking they were being asked to tackle - but it bothered me on a couple levels. First, if there’s no possibility of failing you take away the possibility of success. Or at least of them making it successful. Second, the only way you can really guarantee someone doesn’t fail is to keep lowering the bar until they get over it. And who does that benefit? But what you can do is work hard to pass along the context, knowledge, skills and build relationships that make success more likely. BackgroundI have shelves of management and leadership books - most of which I’ve read. But all too often I look at a book and realize I’ve ignored or forgotten its lessons. I’ve tried highlighting, flagging with Post-It notes, writing little summaries - they have all helped but not enough. So I decided this year to again post a quote a day here. Basically I’m using my LinkedIn community to hold me accountable, so thanks all. The quotes won’t necessarily be the most powerful or my favorite, just one that jumped out at me when reviewing that book. Ryan Holiday

Leadership Quote of the Day 438Teaching is sometimes the best way to learn.Help Them Grow or Watch Them GoBeverly Kaye & Julie Winkle Giulioni____________________________________________Whenever I go to teach people something three things are clarified for me:What I know: Knowledge is usually acquired a little at a time and sometimes you don’t realize just how much you’ve learned until you think about passing it along to someone else. What I don’t know: Inevitably there will be gaps that aren’t clear until I look holistically at what I do know. Teaching to someone else is a great driver for filling those gaps. And if you don’t that will be the questions they ask, so you’ll end up doing it regardless. What I know that is’t so: My brain creates links and patterns that don’t exit to help me track things. Sort of like constellations which are patterns of stars in terms from this time and place but don’t exist objectively. I can’t count the number of times I’ve laid out my constellation to someone I’m training only to see on their face that they are looking at it from a different time and place. While humbling, it’s also an opportunity to understand from their perspective which leads to a deeper understanding myself. Leadership Quote of the Day 437His attention to discipline and exacting detail no doubt saved a lot of lives. But I didn't agree (nor would I ever) that fear was the only way to get results. About FaceCol David H. Hackworth____________________________________________It’s not like Hackworth was reluctant to discipline, or use techniques that are frowned upon, even in today’s Army. But he recognized fear only works for a little while and while you’re watching. Shared purpose, respect, they work when you’re not looking. There are standards I still hold myself to because of the example bosses I’ve long stopped working for set. Be that kind of boss. Leadership Quote of the Day 436Principles are credible only if they are consistently applied. So they must be part of the everyday making of business decisions, not simply called up in response to pressure after a situation has exploded. Strategy in a Hyperpolitical World, Harvard Business Review, November-December 2022Roger L Martin, Martin Reeves____________________________________________It’s not just a business thing, it’s also a personal thing. If family or the environment or religion is one of your personal principles than it needs to be part of every decision. It’s not a principle if you only break it out for marquee moments. Leadership Quote of the Day 435Effective managers manage themselves and the people they work with so that both the organization and the people profit from their presence. The One Minute ManagerKen Blanchard and Spencer Johnson____________________________________________That’s it in a nutshell. If you’re not doing both those things you’re not fulfilling your responsibilities as a leader. It’s also why leadership is hard - those often feel they are in opposition to one another. One of Stephen Covery’s habits is Win, Win or No Deal. Keep looking until you find a solution that both the company and the people benefit from. Leadership Quote of the Day 434There was no miracle moment.Jim CollinsGood To Great____________________________________________I was recently reading an article about traffic deaths in Hoboken, NJ, and the fact there hasn’t been any in seven years. The part that hit home with me was from the city’s transportation director Ryan Sharp, who said “There really isn’t a silver bullet or any magic, innovative thing where we’ve cracked a code. Our approach has been more about focusing on the fundamentals. We’ve created a program where we’re laying these things in year after year.”I think Jim Collins would agree. Leadership Quote of the Day 433Past success provides too many resources, reduces our sense of urgency, and encourages us to turn inward. For individuals, it creates an ego problem; for firms, a cultural problem.John P. KotterLeading Change, With a New Preface by the Author____________________________________________It’s easy to believe that a successful streak means we’ll always be successful, we’ve got the Midas touch, nothing can stop us. And then we stop doing the things that made us successful - stop innovating, stop stretching capabilities, stop making hard decisions - and just assume we’ll win anyway because we always have. And then when we don’t it must be someone else’s fault cause we haven’t changed. Whether you’re riding a lucky streak or an unlucky streak it’s self-defeating to believe that streak will never end. Leadership Quote of the Day 432As we approach any life transition - whether it's a first job, a second marriage, or a third child - we can pause to ask people what they wish they'd known before they went through that experience.Think AgainAdam Grant____________________________________________Nothing you are experiencing is unique to you. Whether you’re excited, worried, nervous, joyful, scared, confused or disinterested in any life transition someone else has felt the same way. It doesn’t mean their answer is the right answer for you, but there’s strength in seeing how others approached it and what they learned. And people want to tell their story and you may even learn something about them along the way too. BackgroundI have shelves of management and leadership books - most of which I’ve read. But all too often I look at a book and realize I’ve ignored or forgotten its lessons. Leadership Quote of the Day 431Diminishers give answers. Good leaders ask questions. Multipliers ask the really hard questions. Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone SmarterLiz Wiseman____________________________________________My first career was as a newspaper reporter and editor so I might be slightly biased but I think good questions are one of the most powerful things on the planet. But there are bad questions too. Signs of a bad question are: It takes longer to ask the question than answer it. Political press conference questions are frequent offenders here. Good chance second reason is also in play then. You don’t care about the answer. If you don’t care enough to listen to what the other person thinks, don't waste their time asking, it’s patronizing. You already know the answer. In reality you probably don’t know the right answer, see above. So let’s go back to Wiseman for what makes a really hard question“They ask questions that challenge people not only to think but to rethink. They ask questions so immense people can’t answer them based on their current knowledge or where they currently stand. To answer these questions, the organization must learn. Liz Wiseman
